The Suicide Squad starlet, Margot Robbie, recently snagged the role of the protagonist in the movie 'I, Tonya'. It is a biopic based on the life of the infamous, former figure skater Tonya Harding. Tonya Harding was a two-time Olympian, a two-time Skate America Champion and the first ever woman to perform a triple axel. Fellow figure skater and rival Nancy Kerrigan was believed to be the next winner of the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championship. However on Jan. 6, 1994, Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted with a baton while she was leaving a practice session in Detroit. While she was recuperating from her injuries, Tonya Harding replaced her and instantly shot to fame. Ongoing investigations of the assault on Nancy Kerrigan showed the involvement of Tonya's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly. It was believed that Gillooly hired people to assault Kerrigan and break her leg so as to get her out of Harding's way. From that point onwards, the entire mystery unravelled where Harding confessed to having knowledge of the notorious plan made by her ex-husband and his accomplice. She pleaded guilty to blocking the investigation into Kerrigan's attack although she claimed that she was not aware about the attack until after it had taken place. Harding was subsequently banned from figure skating for a lifetime and stripped of her 1994 title. Kerrigan however, bagged the silver medal at the 1994 Olympics in spite of being severely injured. Margot Robbie, Bryan Unkeless, and his production house Clubhouse Productions are producing “I, Tonya”. A director has yet to be announced for the upcoming movie and there is a lot of buzz surrounding this project.
